Two of Australia's best young players are making a run at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Sydney's Cameron Davis, the 2017 Australian Open champion, has a share of the lead in the US PGA Tour event near Honolulu after shooting 68-66 in the opening two rounds.

He is at six-under par, tied with American Brendan Steele at the top.

Davis, 24, had to fight to keep his playing rights this season after his debut on the tour in 2018-19, but he may be about to cash in.

Meanwhile Presidents Cup star Smith has carded rounds of 70-65 to be at five-under, just a shot back in third place.

Smith is playing his first event since the Presidents Cup in Melbourne.
