The Vines of Reynella, in the southern foothills of Adelaide, is one of the many clubs to have benefited from the boom in golf with full membership and this was reflected in strong support for the sixth round of the SA Senior Order of Merit with a field of 24 women and 73 men on an absolutely perfect sunny autumn day with zero breeze. The club has a stormwater collection system meaning that the are able to present lush fairways despite the hilly terrain. However, the mastering the excellent but tricky greens seemed to leave many players somewhat perplexed. Lyn Hood (Thaxted Park) grabbed both the Senior Women’s Gross and Nett but the best women’s score of 85 came from Super Senior, Paula White (Blackwood). The very strong women’s group from Blackwood are really embracing the first year of a women’s SOOM in SA and dominated the Super Senior results with only Briony Williams (Mt Osmond) getting a real “look-in” – losing the Nett to Marge Rawlinson on a countback. Nigel Turner (Links Lady Bay) took his second win for the season to-date with a 74 in a countback from Stephen Weeks (Glenelg). Nigel currently sits 5th in the SA Senior Order of Merit and this win will move him up with his rivals not featuring. Club captain, Michael Gibbie shot 75 followed by another local in Mark Potter (76). Mark is an experienced pennant player for The Vines and plans to play more senior events as reducing work commitments permit and can be expected to be a future contender. Gibbie, with an excellent 67, won the Seniors Nett, again from Weeks, with another local Vin Pike in third. Men’s Super Seniors saw Tea Tree Gully’s Michael and Jim Richards (not related) leading the way. As in previous years, defending champion, Michael has started the season slowly but now has a win on the board and will again be challenger as will Jim. The Super Senior’s – Nett went to Rod Bell from The Vines on a countback from clubmate Dean Quinn.
