Queenslander Louis Dobbelaar and local star Mackenzie Wilson have control of the men’s and women’s sections of the Tasmanian Amateur with a round to play.

As the players ground out 36 holes at Mowbray Golf Club today the highlight was a course record 61 by Queensland’s Adam Hawkins in the third round of the men’s event.

Hawkins, who plays out of Palm Meadows, ran hot with eight birdies and an eagle to leap into third place in the men’s.

But Dobbelaar, 19, extended his lead to five shots through three rounds after carding a 65 and 70 today.

The Brookwater Golf Club champion, Dobbelaar has already won two Queensland state titles and a New Zealand Amateur and he hopes to add to his collection before turning professional.

At 11-under overall, he is five ahead of last year’s winner, another Queenslander Will Florimo, with Hawkins a further two shots back. Realistically, it is Dobbelaar’s to win or lose tomorrow and he rallied strongly on the back nine today, having slid to three over par for the day before rolling in birdie putts at the 12th, 13th, 14th and 17th holes.

Wilson, 17, has a four-shot lead over another Tasmanian, Sarah Johnstone, who is the only player in range of victory. The Tasmania Golf Club player, who is also club champion at Royal Hobart, has shot rounds of 74-74-70 to be on the cusp of her first state senior title.

Three consecutive birdies to finish a long day on the course gave her a seemingly unequivocal hold on the championship.

Meanwhile in the Tasmanian Senior Masters, legendary Lindy Goggin leads the women’s by a shot going into the final round, while New South Welshman Bryan Gulliver vaulted into the lead in the men’s championship.
