After a year’s hiatus due to Covid-19, the Victorian Pennant season concluded in spectacular Melbourne Autumn sunshine on Sunday 2 May. Fourteen finals were staged across four venues to decide the Men’s, Women’s and Colts competitions for 2021. The magnificently remodelled North course at Peninsula-Kingswood played host to the Division 1 and 2 Men’s and Women’s finals with Metropolitan/Royal Melbourne fighting out the closest contest of the day for the Men’s Division 1 flag. Lukas Michel secured the victory for Metropolitan with a 19th hole win over Royal Melbourne's Darcy Brereton in the deciding match. Faced with a tucked front right pin and a one shot lead over Brereton who found trouble right off the tee, the 2019 US Mid-Amateur champion played a brilliant approach under pressure to two feet for a conceded victory. Commonwealth triumphed in Women’s Division 1 by defeating Victoria 5.5 matches to 1.5 to complete an unbeaten season. The win also marked the club’s third Division 1 title over the past four seasons. The Heritage took out Women’s Division 2 with a close four match to three victory over Royal Melbourne while Victoria won Men’s Division 2 with a five match to two result over Riversdale. In the Colts competition, Commonwealth continued its recent dominance with the club’s eighth Division 1 title in ten years, this time courtesy of a four match to one win against Peninsula-Kingswood. With healthy galleries of spectators evident at all finals venues enjoying competitive golf in superb conditions, the overwhelming feeling was simply how great it was to have the 100 year old competition return and be played after the pandemic ruined year of 2020. Golf Australia and Golf Victoria express their sincere appreciation to all clubs that hosted the competition during 2021 and the many players, caddies, club officials, supporters and State referees that participated.
