Wong, Robards win Vic junior titles
by Golf Australia
Jeneath Wong has blitzed the field to take out the Victorian Girls Championship whilst Joshuaa Robards held on despite a nervy finish to claim the boys title.
After a highly interrupted tournament due to several weather disruptions, the 2020 championship at Cranbourne Golf Club was reduced from 72 to 54 holes, and the leading players had to complete their second rounds this morning before commencing the final round.
Wong capped off another stellar tournament by firing her second course record in the space of a month with a six-under-par 66.
Wong finished runner-up last month at the Junior Vic Open and was determined to go one better.
Her round of 66 at Cranbourne today went alongside her 63 at 13th Beach as another course record.
Wong’s final round saw her finish at 12-under for the championship and a staggering 13 shots clear of the runner-up in Tiana Wanigasekera.
In contrast, the boys championship was a much tighter affair with Michael Song and Joshuaa Robards neck-and-neck for much of the final round.
With Song having four holes remaining on the 15th tee, Robards was completing his final hole with a two-shot advantage.
After a near flawless round of golf, Robards was dealt a terribly unlucky lie in the 18th greenside bunker that resulted in a double bogey to level the scores with Song at four-under-par.
Ultimately Robards was able to hang on for victory as bogeys for Song on holes 16 and 17 saw him fall just two short.
Song would not go home empty handed as he took out the under 16 boys gross section. Nivethan Kanthan topped off a great week as he would be crowned the under 16 boys net section.
The under 14 division saw Rupert Toomey reign supreme in the gross and Eric Lai was the champion in the net.
In the girls age divisions, Jeneath Wong would claim another trophy by taking home the under 16 gross and Alexandra Phanuruk taking victory in the net.
The under 14 girls saw Molly Mclean hold on for victory in the gross and Claire Wu claimed the win in the net.
