Vale Bill Cassidy, longtime referee
by Contributor
The president, board and staff of Golf Victoria express their deepest sympathy at the passing of much respected state referee, William (Bill) Cassidy, aged 88 years. Bill had a much appreciated and long association with Golf Victoria as a state rules referee in a range of Victorian events and pennant golf after attaining accreditation in the inaugural state Level course in 1993. The courses were introduced to upskill interested men and women and create a group of volunteers to act as referees at the increasing number of events conducted by the VGA and Women’s Golf Victoria. Many of these referees, including Bill went on to officiate at national and state events which in his case included six Australian Opens, countless Victorian Opens and Melbourne pennant finals. As part of the 2018 Victorian Golf Industry Awards Night, Bill’s outstanding contribution to Victorian golf over this 25-year period was formally recognised. Golf Victoria’s sincere condolences are extended to Bill’s wife of 64 years, Jean, children Richard, Susan, Belinda and Michael, grandchildren James, Paul, Kellie, Megan, Jaclyn, Stephanie and Rachel and great grandson Logan. A long-time member of the Kingswood Golf Club (now Peninsula-Kingswood), Bill had a wonderful passion for life and golf and will be sadly missed. Note: A feature article on Bill & Jean Cassidy and their longstanding involvement in golf, written by Martin Blake was published in the Golf Victoria in 2018. As a tribute to Bill and in recognition of his contribution to Victorian Golf, it is reproduced here.
