Top guns line up for Vic Am finals
by Martin Blake
Two Western Australians, a New South Welshman and a Victorian -- all among Australia's best -- have reached Tuesday’s 36-hole finals of the Victorian Amateur.
In the women’s final, Port Phillip Amateur medallist Kirsten Rudgeley from Mt Lawley in Perth will take on Metropolitan’s Jeneath Wong, her closest rival in the strokeplay qualifying over the weekend.
Just a shot separated them over four rounds prior to their two matchplay wins today.
The men’s final is also a cracker between New South Wales star Harrison Crowe (St Michael’s) and Perth’s Joshua Greer.
Rudgeley, who is already the reigning WA Amateur champion, took down Kelsey Bennett of NSW in the semi-final today, 2 and 1.
Wong, just 16, is the club champion at Metro and earlier this year won the Riversdale Cup for women. She defeated another Victorian, Stephanie Bunque, 3 and 1 in their semi-final today.
Crowe, 19, beat Metropolitan’s Ted Donoghue 1 up in the semi-finals, with the NSW star battling nose bleeds throughout the afternoon. Greer (Joondalup) took 21 holes to oust Christopher Fan (St Michael’s).
The finals begin at 7.30am tomorrow at Metropolitan.
