Golf Australia is deeply saddened to learn that Portarlington Golf Club member Rod Gurney has passed away after sustaining a head injury on course on Tuesday, 30 March. Rod was a much-loved member at Portarlington and played regularly with his friends, particularly in Tuesday club competitions. As per a Portarlington Golf Club release this morning, he was taken on the day of the incident from the course to the clubhouse and treated by ambulance officers, who subsequently took him home. His condition became worse later that day and he was taken to a Geelong hospital before being transferred to a Melbourne hospital. Sadly, his condition deteriorated through the week and, surrounded by family, he passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon. Rod was 69. Portarlington Golf Club chief executive Michael Phillips remains in constant contact with the family to offer any support required. With the assistance of Golf Australia, the club’s immediate focus is to support family, club members and staff directly involved in the accident and provide counselling as required. The club asks that you please keep the family and his golfing partners on the day in your thoughts and allow them the privacy they need as they go through this difficult time.
