Super senior Richards wins Thaxted Park Cup
by Golf Australia
The Thaxted Park round of the SA Senior Order of Merit is unique in that it offers a perpetual trophy for the outright winner of both Seniors and Super Seniors on the day. Evergreen Michael Richards (Tea Tree Gully) beat the whole field of Seniors and Super Seniors by shooting an excellent 73. Mike is the reigning Super Senior Order of Merit champion but has had a slightly slow start to the season by his high standards but bounced back with a vengeance.
An excellent field of 62 players assembled – this was a great turn-out for what is one of the smaller SA suburban clubs so well done to the organisers. A sunny day with not much wind for a change.
Seniors Gross went to Glen McGough (Blackwood) 75, by one shot from local Boyd Austin 76 on a countback from last round’s winner, Craig Gordon (Tea Tree Gully). Glen’s consistent play clearly makes him a contender for the Order of Merit but new-comer Craig looks like he will be definitely in the mix. Other contenders in Bruce Lindner, Richard Payne, Steve Ross and last years winner, Trevor Smith all finished ton ten.
Seniors Nett went to a home club player in Michael Bolton (71) from Shane Virgo (Oakbank) and former Thaxted member, Andy Munn (74’s).
Super Seniors gross saw local Bob Baird (75) chase Mike Richards home with always-present Eric Lane (The Grange) adding to his points tally. Lindsay Elliott continues to pick up points (4th) and 2019 Senior runner-up, Ken Parker returned his best score since moving to the Super Senior’s ranks.
Super Senior Nett was a Thaxted Park trifecta with George Melville, Don Mawson and Trevor Ryan taking away the spoils and, no doubt, making their participation worthwhile.
