Su Oh goes to US Open in form
by Martin Blake
Australian Su Oh warmed up for next week’s US Women’s Open with her best finish on the LPGA Tour for nine months today.
Oh, 24, finished tied-11th in the Volunteers of America event at The Colony in Texas after a closing round of 69, two under par.
It is her best finish since she was sixth at the ISPS Handa Vic Open in February, just before the prolonged break in the tour caused by Covid-19.
Oh, the Australian Olympian who plays out of Metropolitan Golf Club, is in the field for the Open next week. But she has also jumped a few paces on the LPGA Tour’s points list with today’s result.
She was 89th entering this week after at one point missing eight consecutive cuts this year; after today she will be 80th. However she needs a strong result next week to reach the tour championships in Florida just before Christmas, where only the top 72 will play.
It was a good week for the Australians. Minjee Lee and Sarah Kemp (tied 19th), Hannah Green (24th) and Katherine Kirk (25th) were all prominent in a tournament won by veteran American Angela Stanford.
The US Women’s Open, delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, is at Champions Golf Club in Texas from Thursday night, eastern Australian time.
Lee, Green, Oh, Kirk, Sarah Jane Smith and amateur Gabi Ruffels are in the field for the year’s final golf major.
