After a “long and tough” day at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday, Cameron Smith remains in the mix at The Players Championship in Florida.

The Queenslander sat just three shots from the lead at six under par overall with eight holes to complete in his third round of a weather-marred event.

He will resume tonight Australian time with a five-metre birdie putt on the 11th green, with organisers hoping to complete both the third and fourth rounds across the day.

Smith is tied seventh, playing on a course that his near his Jacksonville home and where he practises regularly.

India’s Anirban Lahiri slept on the lead overnight, at nine under par through 11 holes of his third round.

Smith said he would not be changing his approach today. “I think just be patient,” he said.

“I've played this golf course enough to -- I've birdied every hole around here a million times it seems like, and it's important not to get ahead of myself.”

The only other Australian left in the field, Victorian Lucas Herbert, is tied-57th.
