Scott's 64 puts him in mix at Riviera
by Martin Blake
Adam Scott shot a sensational second-round 64 to launch himself into contention at the Genesis Invitational on the US PGA Tour today.
Scott is playing his first tournament of 2020 but he shows no signs of rust.
He made seven birdies at Riviera including five on the back nine, almost eagled the par-five 17th hole, and made a great par-save from an untidy drive to post the low round of the day.
Scott had a share of the lead soon after he finished, but he was overtaken late in the day by a handful of players, including Matt Kuchar, who leads by two shots, and Rory McIlroy.
The Australian, who turns 40 this year, said his drought-breaking win at the Australian PGA championship on the Gold Coast late in 2019 had given him confidence.
“It feels a long time ago, but it was a nice way to finish last year which was a year of generally playing fairly good golf. I think it just gave me a bit of confidence to start off this year and so did today’s round. So I’m looking forward to the weekend now.’’
Meanwhile Jason Day carded two double bogeys in a 76 to miss the cut.
