Luke Saunders and Kim Morris have claimed victory at the Victorian Mid-Amateur Championships.

Windy conditions provided a stern test of golf as the event moved regionally to Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale Golf Clubs for the first time.

The women’s event saw Morris hold out overnight leader Siobhan Anderson by one shot.

Morris trailed by three shots going into today’s round but a fast start saw her go to the turn two shots ahead.

With a three-shot lead on the 14th tee, victory was in sight.

Anderson was not done with yet and a birdie on 14 followed by a par on 15 and there was only shot in it.

Both players made bogeys on the final three holes and it would be Morris who claimed the title for the first time with her overall score of 160.

“It is a great honour to win this event. It was a great battle with Siobhan and I was lucky enough to get the victory”, rejoiced Morris.

Bev Smith would finish in third place with her total of 170.

The men's event would be just as thrilling as Saunders produced two consistent rounds of golf with scores of 76 and 75 giving him victory by a single shot.

Saunders was thrilled to take out the title for the first time.

“This is my first tournament so to get the victory is a huge honour”, Saunders said.

“Both courses were fantastic but the wind made it extremely difficult.”

With four players within one shot going into today’s round, the finish was always going to be tight.

Saunders stood on the 18th tee with a two-shot lead over Peter Brooks and a three-shot lead over Greg Wilson.

Saunders would produce a fantastic 300m drive down the short Par 5 and was in prime position to take out the event.

A loose second shot opened the door slightly and Brooks and Wilson mounted on the pressure with a birdie and eagle respectively.

Saunders recovered well and holed a crucial four-foot putt for victory, finishing with an overall total of 151.

Three-time former champion and last year’s winner Mark Boulton produced the round of the day with a 73 giving him the overall runner-up prize on a countback from Brooks and Wilson.

In the Men’s B Grade, local Bairnsdale member Jason Paterson would be victorious with his total of 175.

Paterson finished two shots ahead of Greg Baker whilst Chris Campbell had the best net in B grade across the two days with his scores of 79 and 70.

In the Men’s A grade net, Lewis Read finished on top with a 150 total whilst Annelie De Villiers won the women’s with 159.

Both Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance were presented in fantastic condition with the volunteers of both clubs embracing the event fantastically.
