A pair of Queenslanders jumped to the lead in the men’s section while local star Mackenzie Wilson is dominating the women’s at the Tasmanian Amateur, which began at Mowbray today.

Ben Stieler and multiple state champion Louis Dobbelaar shot 66 and 67 respectively to take control on the men’s side.

Both are products of Brookwater Golf Club in Brisbane and they have a three-shot gap on the rest of the field in the 72-hole stroke event.

Stieler, 20, is off a plus one handicap. Dobbelaar, 19, is a previous winner of the New Zealand Amateur and the Queensland Amateur twice.

Wilson, 17, is a prodigious talent, winner of the Tasmanian Junior Masters last year. She shot a two-over par 74 to lead the women by four shots from past winner Sarah Johnstone and Hallie Meaburn (both 78).

In the co-running Tasmanian Senior Masters, Meaburn’s grandmother and Tasmania’s greatest-ever female amateur, Lindy Goggin, has the lead after opening with an 86. Launceston’s Shayne Walker (72) leads the men’s division of the senior event.

Mowbray presented nicely for its second hosting of the state amateur in consecutive years and the weather was superb for the opening day’s play.

There will be 36 holes of stroke play tomorrow followed by the final round on Monday.
