Murwillumbah’s Lucas Higgins survived a gripping playoff to win the oldest division of the Gary Player Classic at Pacific Golf Club today.

Higgins won the 18-20 years section for the second year in a row, while Tyler Duncan of Redcliffe controlled the 16-17 years division and Southport’s Manato Nakatani took the under 15 title.

Higgins had an epic day, having to come from behind against a rampant Joel Stahlhut, who led by five shots with nine holes to play.

Higgins birdied the second playoff hole to complete the win, after Stahlhut made a five-metre putt at the first playoff hole to extend the contest.

Duncan’s win in the 16-17 group was comprehensive after he established a four-shot lead with his second round 67. But he stumbled in the third round and had to dig deep on the last day, ultimately being the only player to finish under par.

Nakatani led into the final round of the under 15s and remained steady with a 75 to win by two shots.
