Play 9 Vic winners
Lee-Anne Chapman and Michael Ponton are on their way to the Open.

Lee-Anne Chapman (Portland) and Michael Ponton (Flinders) have earned themselves a trip to Sydney after winning the Victorian Play 9 state final.

Chapman returned 20 points and Ponton 17 points over nine holes at Metropolitan Golf Club, allowing them both to qualify for the national final to be played during the #AusOpenGolf at The Australian Golf Club next week.

Both were extremely excited about the opportunity. “This is the best thing that has ever happened to me,” Chapman said.

Second placegetters Lee Watson (Heritage) and Yun Shu Liu (Huntingdale) also qualified for the national final.

Mandy Faram (Shepparton) and Bernard Reed (Portarlington) finished in third place.

A total of 76 players teed it up on the day, with players from as far as Mildura, Portland, and Shepparton competing. All had qualified via club rounds and district finals.

This was the third year of Play 9. It is part of Golf Australia’s commitment to promote nine-hole golf, which multiple research studies have suggested can help significantly in attracting new people to the game and retaining golfers during time-poor periods of their lives.
