Park, Nakatani win GNJM
by Golf Australia
Greg Norman Junior Masters champions Hye Park and Manato Nakatani had to fight off more than just their competitors on their way to the spoils, in a week where the famous Gold Coast beaches came flooding to the golf course.
Park, the recent Katherine Kirk Classic champion, and Nakatani, from Surfers Paradise Golf Club, won the 36-hole reduced event at Palmer Gold Coast today after torrential downpour caused havoc throughout the week.
Nakatani, 16-years-old, dazzled the boys’ field with the best opening round of 69, followed by a three-under-par 68 to seal the championship by one. The win also earns him an exemption into the Isuzu Queensland Open to be held in March next year.
Brisbane Golf Club’s Campbell Kerr produced a pair of 69s to finish in second on 138.
Park, who has collected six national ranking titles in the past two years, began the final round three back from recent Keperra Bowl women’s champion Justice Bosio, but the 17-year-old clawed back for victory by four.
Five birdies in her closing 11 holes secured the win while second place was settled by a three-way countback with Bundaberg’s Kate McFarlane coming out on top on 146.
