New South Wales are the champions of the Australian Junior Interstate Teams Matches after securing the title with a clutch 5-3 victory in a must-win contest against rivals Victoria on the final day at Mount Osmond in Adelaide.

The NSW team were undefeated for the week with five wins and one tie - against Queensland on the opening day - after they lived up to the label given to them by many of the opposing captains as the side to beat.

It is clear why they were identified with that moniker as their team is filled with up-and-coming stars that Australian golf fans will need to keep an eye on in the coming years.

Two-time Australian Junior Amateur champion Jeffrey Guan is already highly regarded, while this week’s undefeated trio of Ella Scaysbrook, Jye Halls and Will Moody also put their names up in lights.

Boys captain Joshua Todd was full of praise for his highly talented team.

“It’s an awesome feeling. We did really well,” he said of their victory.

“We just had an awesome week and to top it off with a win was great. Golf’s really individual so it’s just great to play with a team and we’ve got such a great vibe between us.”

“For us boys, it’ll be our last Junior Interstate so it’s great to finish with a win but a few of the girls are quite young so they’ve got a few more years and should do alright.”

Girls captain Charlotte Perkins said the highlight of the week was the final day against Victoria.

“Going into it we knew the results were going to be really tight,” she said.

“Ella holed a really good putt on the last hole to halve, Jye made it to the 18th hole too and the rest were all the 16th or 17th. They were really tight matches.

“We all came together a lot closer on this trip and that’s what made us have the support system to encourage each other onto the win.”

In keeping with tradition, separate boys and girls trophies were awarded with New South Wales taking out the boys and Western Australia claiming the girls.

WA’s tournament wrapped up yesterday - Tasmania’s withdrawal due to Covid-19 protocol stopped the boys from playing today but the girls would have had the morning off regardless due to Tasmania not fielding a girls team - and their captain Amie Phobubpa was thrilled with her teammates efforts.

“All the girls were really good from day one of the Aussie Junior to the end of the Interstate Series,” Phobubpa, who was undefeated for the week, said.

“We all united as one. We all have this bond that I think a lot of teams may not have as much as we do. We spend a lot of time together and we’re always having fun.”

“The energy was good and we had good vibes. We kept it easy all week and had as much fun as we could.”
