Athletes in Golf Australia’s national programs have been finalised for 2021.

High performance general manager Brad James said the second year of the “tiered” structure shows a clear pathway for all emerging athletes.

“We’ve seen great success already for our `Rookie Squad’ athletes, both this year and in previous years,” James said.

“And we think it’s already become a very visible path for all those in the tiers below to see and follow as they progress.”

“The Rookie Squad are professionals, our Tier 1 athletes who receive reimbursed funding towards the investment they make in expanding their career through training, preparation, travel and competition, visas, caddie fees and the like.

“Our Tier 2 athletes receive greater access to international and national competitions at amateur and professional level. They also have access to added resources that complement and integrate with each athlete’s training environment including strength and conditioning, sports psychology, physiotherapy, coaching and competitive drills.

“Our Tier 3 athletes are similar to those in Tier 2, but at a developmental level.”

James said inductions and training for Tier 2 and Tier 3 athletes had already begun.

“We want to help these young athletes make sense of the pathways through their state and territory high performance programs, through elite amateur golf and on to becoming young professionals.”
