Minjee Lee has moved into position at the LPGA Tour’s Pelican Women’s Championship in Florida today.

Australia’s Lee, coming off her first victory of 2020 in Dubai, shot a second-round 69 on the difficult Pelican Golf Club course to vault to tied-sixth at three under par, five shots from the lead held by world No. 2 Sei Young Kim, who shot 65 today.

“I think I’m in a good position going into the weekend,” Lee said later. “I’m disappointed right now over my score but hopefully I can make a couple more birdies over the weekend.”

Only 18 players in the field were under par through two rounds on the par-70 layout, which is hosting an event for the first time. Lee said all the players had realistic expectations about scoring.

“Actually me and ‘Gilly’ (caddie Jason Gilroyed) were talking about it and we were thinking two or three under each day would be pretty good here. The course is pretty long. It favours the long hitters.”

It’s been a good week for the Australians, with Sarah Jane Smith, Hannah Green and Su Oh all making the cut.

But amateur Gabi Ruffels dropped four shots in the final four holes to miss out on the weekend’s play.

MEANWHILE at Sea Island, Georgia, Jason Day made an eagle and four birdies in a second-round 67 that put him in the mix at the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic. Day is just outside the top 20.
