Kirk runs hot in Georgia
by Martin Blake
Katherine Kirk leapt into contention at the LPGA Tour’s Drive On Championship in Georgia today with a stunning, second-round 65.
Kirk, the Wichita-based Queenslander who is having one of her best seasons, had eight birdies for the day at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
“Just I felt comfortable from the get-go,” said the 38-year-old. “I felt comfortable yesterday, to be honest, as well. I only made two birdies all day which was unusual for me because I usually make a lot and throw in a few mistakes, too.
“So, yeah, just nice to get off to that good start and keep it rolling. There is plenty of chances out there. It's just a matter of staying patient and attacking pins that are more accessible, which I did pretty well.”
At seven under Kirk is tied-fifth, three shots back from the leader, Ally McDonald of the United States.
Perth’s Hannah Green also had a good day, shooting 68 to be just outside the top 30 along with fellow-Australians Su Oh and Minjee Lee (both one under).
CAMERON SMITH is the top Australian at the PGA Tour’s Zozo Championship after two rounds.
Smith shot a 69 at Sherwood today to reach eight-under, six shots from the lead.
MAVERICK Antcliff moved up at the European Tour’s Italian Open overnight with a second-round 67. Antcliff is tied-31st.
