"Juicy' channels Tiger for national crown

by Mark Hayes

It was a case of different course, same result for Greg Rhodes and Helen Pascoe in winning their respective SA Senior Amateur Championships on Wednesday making it back-to-back victories for the duo.

Victorian Rhodes, representing Coomealla GC, led from the start with opening rounds of 72 and 73 before hitting a stumbling block in his final round.

With Rhodes signing for a third round 8-over, it left the door slightly ajar for the fast-finishing John Davey.

Davey, SA’s hopeful from Tea Tree Gully GC, managed to claw back three strokes during the final round, but it wasn’t enough with Rhodes victorious by one in the 54-hole championship.

Victorian Pascoe had to battle to keep her back-to-back hopes alive with leaderboard honours changing throughout.

Western Australia’s Sharon Dawson, of Denmark GC, took first-round honours with a three-stroke lead before Pascoe fired back in round two to go into the final round ahead by one.

Pascoe, of Buninyong GC, was able to steady the ship, eventually shooting her way to a three-stroke victory.

The event was played at the picturesque Naracoorte Golf Club, in SA’s South East, and attracted 76 players from 35 golf clubs around Australia.

Next year the event moves to Links Lady Bay on the Fleurieu Peninsula … could it be a three-peat for the championship duo?
