Generation next at Palmerston
by Golf Australia
Roughly 20km out of Darwin in the Northern Territory, a new generation of golfing girls have burst onto the scene.
Palmerston Golf Club is home to a group of budding girl golfers and community instructor Holly Trembath said the club is determined to make up for lost time.
“Golf is missing a generation of girls and women,” she said. “There are too few teenage girls and women in their 20’s and 30’s playing. But the scholarship program is helping engage girls in golf and hopefully these girls will go on to be those young women who play.”
Trembath forms part of a brilliant team at Palmerston who deliver the program and she is seeing its benefits first-hand.
“Whilst all our six scholarship holders now have handicaps, golf really is a social thing for them,” she said. “The girls have come through our beginner clinics all together as friends and it is now lovely to see them enjoy a girls-only environment. They do still enjoy an occasional girls vs boys group challenge!”
Peter Hargreaves, Regional Development Officer for Golf Australia – NT has also witnessed the importance of the scholarship program at Palmerston.
“I have seen the improvement in the girls each time I visit the club,” he said. “It’s great to get a pathway for these girls established. The program has also created another way to clubs to open their doors to new families. We hope to engage more NT clubs in the AGF scholarship program in 2023 and beyond.”
