The Australian Interstate Series is changing formats.

The cream of the nation's amateur talent will continue to strive for their state's supremacy, but from May this year, they'll do it in a different manner.

Each state and the Northern Territoy will be represented by one team of eight, comprising four women and four men.

Teams will play each other once in a round-robin format - of team match play - with the top two teams meeting to determine the champion on the final day. Women will play against women and men against men in alternating groups.

Previously, there were two competitions held separately on different courses with teams of eight men and six women.

Operations boss Simon Brookhouse said that while Golf Australia recognised the tradition of such tournaments, it was imperative some change to reflect the company's strategic priorities.

"Obviously having a slightly smaller event decreases expenses, but it also ensures that we are far more likely to have access to play such great events on the best possible courses," Brookhouse said.

"Venue procurement is a key foundation in achieving our key goals and very much intertwined into this are operational factors such as format and scheduling.

"Above all, it's an opportunity to showcase our game in its entirety, nurture an inclusive environment for all and strive to engage more women and girls.

"We understand some will yearn for history, but it's important we trust these changes so they enhance the players' experience and the deliverable GA service across such key national events."

The 2020 Interstate Series will be played at Bonnie Doon Golf Club, in Sydney, from 12-15 May.
