Jason Day's return to form ended up with a fourth place in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am today, while Matt Jones also logged a top-five finish.

Day struggled through the back nine of the final round and carded a disappointing 75 that left him eight shots behind the winner, Canada's Nick Taylor.

It is Day's first top-five finish since last year's Masters, and an encouraging return given that he withdrew from the Presidents Cup and the Australian Open because of a back injury.

"It's bittersweet, because I wanted to (win)," Day told AAP after his round.

"But it's still a good step in the right direction. You can find negatives in anything, but it's been a while since I've had a top five and it's a great result to have early in the year. I played well and it's a positive week."
