Concord Cup gains national ranking status
by Golf NSW
The Concord Cup has gained National Ranking Status for 2022 and beyond.
The elevation of the dual Championships for men and women to the highest level of amateur tournament golf in Australia recognises the event’s impressive honour roll, and the reverence of the storied venue amongst players, both professional and Amateur.
First contested in 1911, past champions of the Concord cup include Eric Apperly, Jim Ferrier, Harry Berwick, Jack Newton, Tony Gresham, Steve Conran, Brendan Jones, Nick Flanagan and Won Joon Lee.
Recent winners include Jordan Zunic, Cameron Davis, Chris Fan, and Last year’s champion, Josh Fuller.
The Women’s Concord Cup, traditionally an 18-hole event, will be elevated to a 54 hole tournament in line with the men. Last year’s winner, Belinda Ji is expected to defend her crown.
To be played over 54 holes from Thursday, February 17th, and concluding on Saturday, February 19th, the field will be limited to 168 players, with men required to be on a handicap of 4.0 or less, while women will need to be on 8.0 or less.
Not only will this year’s champions pick up vital National and World Amateur Rankings points, but the winners will also be guaranteed starts in the Golf Challenge NSW Open (Men) to be played at Concord from March 17-20, and the Women’s NSW Open (Women) to be played at Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club from April 28th to May 1st.
Concord Golf Club has been part of Sydney’s golfing landscape since the late 1800s. Venue for the 2022 Golf Challenge NSW Open, Concord has been home to many of Australia’s biggest golfing championships.
Redesigned by acclaimed American course architect Tom Doak and his Renaissance Golf Team, Concord challenges players on every hole, from selecting the most appropriate line off the tee to best navigating the mix of short and long holes, with their angled greens and tricky slopes.
Scott Cragg, Golf Operations Manager at Concord, said the organisation was elated with the tournament’s rise to the top echelon of events on Australia’s elite amateur schedule.
“The club is thrilled to see the Concord Cup recognised amongst the highest level of tournaments in the country. It has always been extremely popular, attracting the best players in the State, and now with National Ranking Status, we hope it will grow into one of the most popular events in the country.”
