Class confirmed at Royal
by Golf Australia
The results of the Royal Adelaide round of the SASOOM, confirmed the undoubted credentials of three of South Australia’s very best seniors when Jill Hodge, Norm Cordina and Michael Richards won in their respective categories. The Royal Adelaide round is always a season’s highlight with 62 South Australian Seniors getting to play on one of Australia’s best courses. 8:30am tee-off, lovely weather with a brisk north-westerly to keep players focussed. Superb greens and fairways but some lush rough waiting if one ventured too far off line. Norm Cordina only plays a restricted OOM season (“young” blokes still need to work !) but is always welcomed and always in contention when he does play. Norm’s 76 was well clear of Richard Payne (Kooyonga) 81 and Mark Pretty (82). Mark ventured up from Millicent in SA’s South-East and has been a top player and a representative in SA country sides for many years. Best Men’s Senior Net score was also Cordina (74) with local Wallace Long (75) getting the prize under normal senior golf “one-prize rule”. Super Senior’s Gross saw defending 3x OOM champion Michael Richards (Tea Tree Gully) (81) win by a single stroke from Royal Adelaide legend, David Cherry. These two have had many battles over the their long and distinguished golfing careers. Ken Brown (Tea Tree Gully) (83) filled the third placing. Mike Richards has been “quite” in terms of wins for a few events but still consistently scoring points so this win will put him right back in OOM contention. Excellent round in Super Senior – nett by Taras Mular (Grange) shooting 71 nett followed by Paul Williams (Glenelg), Mike Richards and Leigh Carpenter (Royal Adelaide), all with 76’s. Jill Hodge (Glenelg) made it back-to-back wins in the Senior Women’s Gross whilst Helen Brauer also backed up her Glenelg win in the Nett with an excellent 74. The 2021 SOOM concludes with next week's SA Senior Amateur Championship being played over 54 holes at Links Lady Bay from Monday to Wednesday. Blackwood members Angela Masters and Rosemary Underwood currently sit 1st and 2nd respectively on the Women's Gross SOOM so with both players in the field for next week it is all to play for.
