Australian Robyn Choi sizzled with a nine-birdie, no-bogey 63 to take the first-round lead in the Symetra Classic on the US secondary tour today in Florida.

Choi, who grew up on the Gold Coast before taking up a college scholarship in the US and turning pro, was unstoppable as she surged to a one-shot lead at the LPGA International course at Daytona Beach.

The 22-year-old is having an excellent season, already sitting eighth on the tour standings after spending last year on the main LPGA Tour, where she made three cuts in 12 events but lost her playing rights for 2020.

Meanwhile Katherine Kirk’s opening 66 put her up close in the LPGA Tour’s Shoprite Classic in New Jersey.

Queenslander Kirk, who is having a fine season, is tied-sixth, just three shots from the lead held by Mi Hyang Lee of South Korea and American Lauren Stephenson.

Sarah Jane Smith also had a good day in New Jersey, shooting a first-round 67 to be tied-12th.
