Choi, Bolton win SA strokeplay

by Martin Blake

Sydney’s Doey Choi and Canberra’s Harry Bolton are the medallists at the South Australian amateur championships after the strokeplay stage.

Concord’s Choi, 19, who is the defending champion this week, crushed the field in the women’s 36-hole event, shooting one-over par to win by six shots from Charley Jacobs of Glenelg Golf Club.

The NSW team stalwart, who has already won the SA (2018), Queensland (2018 and 2014) and NSW amateur titles in her stellar career, blitzed the rest of the field with a two-under par 70 today at The Vines Golf Club of Reynella in southern Adelaide.

Bolton, 22, beat Joshua Gadd of Concord and Metropolitan’s Edward Donoghue in a playoff for the men’s medal, the trio having all posted one-under par 141 for the 36 holes. The Canberra star was triumphant at the first playoff hole.

Bolton, who plays out of Royal Canberra, has just completed four years of college golf at Newberry College in South Carolina and will go into the matchplay as the No. 1 seed.

The matchplay phase begins tomorrow.
