Long-hitting Stephanie Bunque was the dominant player on day one of the Port Phillip Open Amateur at Kingston Heath today.

Victorian Bunque, 23, who finished third in this event last year, soared to a five-under par 69 on the opening day of the 72-hole event to lead by three shots.

The former Victorian Amateur champion and Metropolitan’s Jeneath Wong (-2) were the only women to break par on a tough opening day.

Two of the favorites in the women’s field, Grace Kim and Kirsten Rudgeley, shot three-over par 77s but are still inside the top 10.

Riversdale’s Henry Fewell and Christopher Fan of Avondale of New South Wales are at two-under par 70 and leading the men’s field.

Avondale Golf Club's Fan won this event in 2018.

However US Mid Amateur Champion Lukas Michel is ominously placed at one under par along with Josh Greer, and last year’s winner Louis Dobbelaar shot a solid, opening 72.

Former Davis Cup tennis star Sam Groth, who is playing his first national amateur event, struggled to a 13-over par 85.

But Sam Thomson (Mt Derrimut GC) had an ace at the 144-metre second hole.
