Bridport comfortably secured its first victory in the 45-year history of the Barclay Shield conducted at Mowbray Golf Club on Monday. The team of Raylene Taylor, Karlene Cuthbertson, Trish Nichol and Helen Davies won the team foursomes event with a net score of 157½. “We as players are always honoured to represent our club at any event,” said Raylene Taylor. “But we are especially excited to be able to win such a prestigious title that has never been won by our club before.” Nichol and Davies combined for a fine 75½, while Taylor and Cuthbertson did their bit with a net 82. “Considering the amount of rain over the weekend and the weather forecast, we were very fortunate to have lovely weather for the event,” said Taylor. “The course was in good condition except for a few puddles here and there.” The host club finished second with a total of 161 and was represented by Diane Bullman, Mary Arnold, Elaine Rigby and Juliana Kotynia. Moorina and Prospect Vale Golf Club’s finished half a stroke adrift of Mowbray in equal third place on 161½. Smithton Golf Club rounded out the top five teams finishing a further stroke and a half back in fifth place on 163. The day’s best 18-hole nett was presented to George Town Golf Club’s Vicki Towns and Kerri Davis on 78. The George Town pair finished one stroke in front of Elderslie Golf Club’s Angela Cripps and Julie Hannibal on 79.
