Tasmania junior Mackenzie Wilson teed up to win the women’s Southern Open at Royal Hobart Golf Club on Sunday. The 17-year-old Rosny College student won the event convincingly with a one-over-par round of 74 which included four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. “I felt a bit nervous before I played, which was unusual for me,” said the 2019 Tasmanian women’s team member. “But I felt relaxed on the course even though I was very inconsistent,” said Wilson. Wilson finished four strokes clear of her nearest rival, 17-year-old local member Hallie Meaburn on five-over-par 78. Third place went to 15-year-old Launceston Golf Club member Jorjah Bailey who returned a 14-over-par round of 87. Local members Susan Frith and Sally Eastwood rounded out the top five with 16-over-par rounds of 89. Pittwater Golf Club’s Gillian Downey took out the women’s b grade championship run in conjunction with the women’s Open with a round of 94. Kingston Beach Golf Club’s Barbara Pretyman was second with a round of 96 and was followed closely by local member Anne Windsor in third on 97. Meanwhile, Royal Hobart’s Joey Bower emerged from a quality field of competitors to secure the corresponding men’s Southern Open title. The 20-year-old finished the 36-hole event with rounds of 70 and 72, a two-under-par total of 142 which included nine birdies, five bogeys and one double bogey. “Tough conditions made it a long day, but I was happy with the way I played,” said Bower. “It was tight down the final stretch playing against Simon and I was very happy to get over the line. I’m just glad to be back playing competitive golf,” said Bower. Bower finished one stroke clear of fellow club member and Tasmanian touring professional Simon Hawkes who returned rounds of 68 and 75. Royal Hobart’s Craig Garland finished two strokes adrift of Hawkes in third on one-over-par with 75 and 70. While Ronan Filgate from the Prospect Vale Golf Club placed fourth on three-over after returning 76 and 71. Wynyard’s Jack Lakin and Tasmania Golf Club junior Lachlan White rounded out the top five on five-over-par with 74 and 75, and 71 and 78 respectively. White took out the 36-hole boys’ division, eight strokes in front of fellow Tasmania member Kyedon Grueber who carded 81 and 76, a 13-over-par total of 157. Local member, Peter Shaw, won the 18-hole senior scratch with a score of 80, four stokes in front of Kingston Beach Golf Club’s Spencer Dance on 84.
