Bailey, Filgate Dominate Northern Titles

Launceston Golf Club’s Jorjah Bailey successfully captured the Women’s Northern Amateur Championship title at Riverside on Sunday. The 15-year-old won the event by four strokes from her nearest rival, 16-year-old Tailah Mowat of the Ulverstone Golf Club. Bailey carding rounds of 78 and 78, a 10-over-par total of 156, while Mowat returned scores of 78 and 82 for her 14-over-par total of 160. Tasmanian women’s team and Prospect Vale Golf Club member Lily Caelli placed third on 17-over-par with rounds of 79 and 84. The corresponding Northern men’s championship was conducted over 36-holes in conjunction with the women’s event. Former Tasmanian boys’ team and Prospect Vale member Ronan Filgate blitzed the field to successfully take out the men’s title. Filgate finished nine strokes clear of a quartet of players in second place including Burnie’s Brayden Field, local member Andrew McCarthy, Tasmania’s Mark Schulze and Kurt Davies of George Town. The 19-year-old plus five handicapper carded scores of 70 and 69 for a five-under-par total of 139, while Field, McCarthy, Schulze and Davies all finished at four-over. Ulverstone’s Cameron Allen, Wynyard’s Jack Lakin and Joshua Molendyk of Devonport all tied for third place a shot further back on five-over-par. Robert Johns and Neil Sculthorpe were declared joint winners of the 36-hole handicap section on 142. Johns of George Town and Royal Hobart’s Sculthorpe were only two players to play under their handicaps for the day.
