Aussies On Tour: January 13

by Golf Australia

AOT Jan 13

A number of our leading pros kick-started the new decade this week and they sure did it in style!

The European Tour moved to South Africa and rising stars Maverick Antcliff and Min Woo Lee were brilliant on their way to top 20 finishes, notching six rounds in the 60s between them.

Wade Ormsby returned to the scene of his 2017 win at the Hong Kong Open and it was like the South Australian was in a time warp.

The 39-year-old led wire-to-wire in Hong Kong and showed nerves of steel on Sunday on his way to a four-stroke victory, fending off superstars Shane Lowry and Tony Finau in the process.

After a T3 result at last month's Australian PGA Championship Ormsby picked up where he left off, securing his third pro win to cap off an exciting weekend for Aussie golf fans.

David Gleeson, Terry Pilkadaris and Travis Smyth also cracked the top 15 to get their 2020 campaigns off to a strong start.

On the PGA TOUR, The field trailed American Brendan Steele for most of the final round, and week, but gutsy Queenslander Cam Smith refused to give up in the soggy conditions.

A clutch up-and-down from a greenside bunker on the 72nd hole secured birdie for Smith and forced Steele into extra holes, the Queenslander eventually earning his second PGA Tour crown with a par on the first sudden death hole.

The win secures a 2020 Masters berth for the Australian and means Aussie golf fans won't have to endure another winless season from our biggest stars on the world's top tour.

So in a world-first, we'd like to congratulate Cam and Wade on their thrilling victories and anoint co-#AussieOfTheWeek winners for the first time!
