Family and the Alexandra Golf Club in northern Victoria are planning a 100th birthday celebration for longtime member Gwenda Martin, who had her major milestone recently. Although Covid-19 restrictions forced a postponement of the original family function at the club, it is being planned for the near future. Martin, who still lives in Alexandra but no longer plays golf, is a fixture of the sport in the district. She is a life member of the Dalhousie District Golf Association (since 1991) and served as district president in 1980-81 and district captain from 1984-85. She was also the district's VLGU representative from 1984-1989, and was heavily involved in district golf teams and country week. In recognition of Gwenda’s contribution, the division five pennant which started in 2000, has a perpetual shield named in her honour. "She's a remarkable person," said Glenda Woods, a former district captain. "She's always been passionate about golf and everything that's happening in the district, and she still is. She's as sharp as she ever was. "Even when she stopped playing she used to come to district events and do the cards for us, because she was a whizz with numbers and enjoyed the interaction with all the golfers. She's a lovely person who encouraged people to come out and play golf and supported them when they did."
