Minjee visit thrills girls
by Golf Australia
A video chat with world No.8 Minjee Lee has capped a ground-breaking My Golf Girls virtual program for a group of lucky Victorians.
The online program, born as Golf Australia sought ways to support and engage girls during Covid-19 isolation, ensured regular interaction among a group of Victorian girls aged 9-16.
Last week, 31 girls logged in to a “Q&A” session with MyGolf ambassador Lee, who generously fielded the eager girls’ questions about her life in golf.
The group listened to Lee discuss – among other things – resilience in golf, her favourite courses and also how she once spent four straight hours on the practice putting green.
Megan Carr, Golf Australia’s female engagement manager, organised the session which closed with a rapid-fire 10 question segment with one-word responses from West Australian Lee.
“It was great to have Minjee interact with the girls and give back to a group of girls who are just starting out on their golfing journey,” Carr said.
Lee’s attendance thrilled the girls, many of whom had attended the Vic Open earlier this year to participate in a teen golf program and were lucky enough to watch Lee in action.
“The online session was another example of how we can showcase our elite players to our junior girls to support and aid retention in golf,” Carr said.
Sunday’s session was one of six delivered to girls across metro and regional Victoria, the theme of which was to foster friendships and fun within golf.
“This was especially important when some courses were shut and some of these girls could not access the sport directly,” Carr said.
“It’s a great way to showcase several of the pillars of our Vision 2025 strategy coming to life, particularly around building grass-roots connections, with networks for women and girls.
“It was also a fantastic way for Minjee to continue to give back as she so readily does as a great role model for the next generation.”
Girls across Victoria are invited to join the Victorian Girls Network by contacting Megan Carr at meganc@golf.org.au or 0410 605 359.
