Last 15 spots taken up for Vic Open
by Golf Australia
The last 15 places have been snapped up in the Vic Open men’s field, with an extraordinary seven-man playoff for two places at one of the venues.
Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club in Melbourne’s western suburbs had seven spots on offer, while Curlewis Golf Club not far from this week’s venue at 13th Beach Golf Links offered up eight spots in the field.
At Sanctuary Lakes, Northern Territory professional George Worrell dominated on a track that he has familiarity with having at one point taught there.
His 66 easily placed him in the field for this week’s event but there was a logjam behind him. Brock Gillard (69) went through along with amateur Caleb Bovalina and Michael Choi at 70, but with seven players tied at one-under 71, they had to go back down the 18th for a playoff for two spots.
The positions were taken by John Wade and Lucas Higgins with birdies at the second playoff hole.
At Curlewis, pros Adam Burdett, Gavin Fairfax and Matt Lever all progressed with 70s, along with amateurs Levi Sclater, Jake Hughes and Fraser Anderson.
There was a playoff for the last two spots which Brad Lamb and amateur Stephen Symons passed through.
A total of seven amateurs found their way into the Vic Open men’s field through qualifying. There was no qualifying for women with the field already filled.
