Two aces a 67m-to-one feat

Euan Evans was not content with one hole in one at Royal Melbourne’s east course on Saturday; he had to step up and make two.

The remarkable story emerged today of the 72-year-old RMGC member who holed at the par-three 13th hole on the east course, then again at the par-three 16th within an hour. The odds of the feat are estimated at 67 million to one.

The left-hander, who plays off a handicap of 6.2, hit perfect six irons for both holes in one.

“I was playing a four-ball, and I hit off third (at the 13th),’’ Evans told golf.org.au today. “One of the earlier guys had hit it to 12 feet, and it was the usual thing ‘I’d better get inside that’. It landed, and one of the guys said ‘I think that’s going in!’ We watched it go straight in.

“It was funny at the 16th, because one of the guys had a shot on me, and my partner said ‘the only way we’re going to win this hole is if you hole in one again’. And of course I did. We watched it land, I thought it was going to be short but it went in with the last roll.’’

Evans was required to shout the bar in the long-held tradition, but will not find himself on an honor board. “I might have to donate my own honor board and I’ll say: ‘You only get on here if you have two (holes-in-one) in one day!’’ he said.

Evans, who lives in Hampton, has had four previous aces in a career that includes pennant golf for RMGC.
