Stubbs crowned par 3 champion

Winners
L-R: Steffanie Vogel, Greg Ryan & Piper Stubbs

Huntingdale’s Piper Stubbs has been crowned the 2018 Victorian Women’s Par 3 Champion after holding on to her opening round lead to win by 4 strokes.

Stubbs held a one-shot buffer over defending champion Jessica Pickwick after day one and fired a final round 58 to run out a clear winner. Stubbs was able to improve her front nine by five strokes in round two and managed to complete the tournament without recording a single double-bogey. Steffanie Vogel (Cobram Barooga GC) claimed the runner-up prize after shooting rounds of 63 and 59 for a total of 122.

15-year-old Stubbs also took out the junior (U18) championship whilst the junior nett trophy went to Tyana Phan (Churchill-Waverley GC).

Phan provided the highlight of the tournament with her hole-in-one on the 14th hole this afternoon. This was a first in the tournament’s history at the Kyabram Parkland Golf Club and the Kyabram Parkland committee calculated that it had taken over 36 000 attempts to get there.

Phan also added the a-grade gross title to her collection after shooting 123 for the tournament and finishing ahead of Jessica Pickwick (Kimore GC) on a countback. The A-grade nett winner was Mooroopna’s Jessica Scapin who finished with 110 off a daily handicap of 11.

The B-grade gross title went to Box Hills’s Mary Walkinshaw who shot a 36-hole total of 135 and finished 5 clear of local member Lana McInnes. The b-grade nett prize was won by Marg Henney (Mooroopna GC) who played off a daily handicap of 19 and finished with 109.

C-grade honours went to Heathcote’s Dorothy Trott after finishing with a two-round total of 149 to win by 2 strokes over Margaret Azzopardi (Melton Valley GC). The c-grade nett trophy went to Rossdale’s Suzanne Ferguson who recorded 2 fantastic rounds to finish with a total of 98.

The committee members, volunteers and course staff of Kyabram Parkland are to be congratulated on the fantastic hospitality shown to all players and guests during the championship. The 2019 event has been confirmed for June 5-6 next year and we hope to see the event grow bigger and better.

Attention now moves to the Victorian Men’s Par 3 Championship, kicking off with 36-holes on Saturday at Kyabram Parkland followed by the final round on Sunday morning.
