Minjee Lee just missed a top 10 finish at the AIG Women’s British Open today as Japan’s 20-year-old rookie Hinako Shibuno stole the show.

Lee closed with a 69 to finish eight under- par and 10 shots from the lead.

While she never threatened to win it was return to form for the 23-year-old Australian, who is No. 4 in the world.

Another Western Australian, Hannah Green, also enjoyed a good weekend with a 69 on Sunday to finish a further shot back in a tie for 16th, while Victorian Su Oh was tied-21st after a closing 66, continuing her strong form.

Shibuno took a two-shot lead into the final round but was attacked by American Lyzette Salas, who posted 17-under with a brilliant, final-round 65 that included a lip-out at the final hole.

They were tied as Shibuno came up the last, but the Japanese player hit her approach on to the green and rammed home the birdie putt from six metres to win.

A two-time winner in Japan, she now has full LPGA Tour playing rights and has won her first major.

“I can’t really describe in words what I’m feeling,’’ she said.
