Schneider vying for third Sand Greens title

The 2017 Trimax Victorian Men’s Sand Greens Championship has commenced at Wedderburn GC. Following on from the Women’s championship which concluded on Thursday, 101 men teed it up at this afternoon in still but overcast conditions.

Nathan Schneider has carded a one under par 68 to position himself on top of the leaderboard after round 1. The Beechworth member and past back-to-back champion (’11 & ’12) had a steady round of 2 birdies and 1 bogey to be leading by one shot from Craig Boucher (Midlands) and Stephen Valentine (Kew) on a pair of 69s.

In B-Grade, Hamilton member Ross Murray is leading the charge with a three over par round of 72. Three shots back on 75 is Beechworth’s Brenton Pool who will be looking to close the gap tomorrow. Bannockburn members Guenter Moosbrugger and Bert Moritz carded a pair of 82s off the stick to be equal leaders in C-Grade, two shots ahead of Whycheproof’s Donald Denney on 84.

Valentine carded the lowest nett score in A-grade with a 3 under par round of nett 66. Four players are hot on his tail a mere shot back. Shayne Ward (Bacchus Marsh), Chris Jones (Ringwood), Dylan Pool (Beechworth) and local captain Owen Bailey (Wedderburn) are all tied on nett 67. Murray’s impressive round of nett 62 puts him in the B-grade nett lead a shot ahead of Brenton Pool. Moosbrugger and Moritz are also sharing the C-Grade nett lead both tied on nett 64 with Denney sitting on closely on nett 65.

The men’s tournament dinner is held at the club tonight before the field heads out tomorrow morning for the second and final round.
