Nivethan Kan….and so can Kay

A bumper field of juniors assembled this afternoon at the Metropolitan Golf Club in drizzly and overcast skies. Eventually the clouds parted towards the end of the day revealing a sunny afternoon for the 104-strong field.

After shooting par in November 2017 at the Stuart Appleby Signature Tournament, Nivethan Kanthan has done it yet again to walk home with the overall boys title after signing for 71. At just 12-years-old the Spring Valley young gun notched out Kooringal’s Cameron Taylor on a count-back for the win. Kanthan had an up and down front nine but his back nine was rock solid carding nine straight pars to prevail on the count-back.

Today’s overall girls title went to Sothern’s Kay Bannan with solid round of level-par 72. Bannan, who is also a scholarship holder at Metropolitan Golf Club, warded off the inform Keeley Marx who claimed the Southern Junior Classic only a few days ago in a nail-biting playoff. Tied with Marx was Huntingdale’s Trinity Francis who also shot 74 to sit two behind the victor.

A count-back was again needed to separate a three-way tie for the A division. Matthew McFarlane, Nivethan Kanthan and Cameron Taylor all broke their handicaps by four shots. In the end it was Curlewis’ Matthew McFarlane that walked away with the title.

Siddharth Annangi was too strong in the B division when the Spring Valley member recorded a round of 66, five strokes better than his 13 handicap. In C division, it was Royal Hobart’s Mackenzie Thomas that fired a massive 46 stableford points on the tricky layout to stand proudly on top of the podium. Mornington’s Flynn O’Reilly finished five points back with a tally of 41 points today.
