Kim, Vilips make Youth Olympics

Grace Kim and Karl Vilips

Grace Kim and Karl Vilips have been chosen to represent Australia at the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

The teenagers have joined 86 other talented young Aussies across 25 sports who will compete in Buenos Aires from October 6-18.

Their selection is great reward for some outstanding results in the past couple of years.

Kim, of Sydney, is also flying to Ireland today as one of the three-strong Australian team for next week's World Amateur Teams Championship.

The Avondale Golf Club member was one of two recipients of this year's Karrie Webb Scholarship as the winner of the national rankings series in 2017-18, including victory at the Tasmanian Stroke Play and podium finishes in five other tournaments.

Kim, the 2017 Australian Junior champion, was also part of the Australia team at the 2018 Queen Sirikit Trophy and part of the winning Asia-Pacific team at the 2018 Patsy Hankins Trophy against the might of Europe.

Vilips, orginally from Perth but based in Florida for his education at Saddlebrook Preparatory, has won five times on the tough AJGA circuit in the past two years, taking him all the way to being ranked the top junior in the United States briefly mid-year.

He competed for the International team in the 2017 Junior Presidents Cup in New Jersey and sits atop the rankings to be selected again when the event returns to Royal Melbourne next year.

The three-time Junior All-American is the joint youngest winner of the Southern Amateur Championship, a title he shares with one of the world's most revered golfers, Bobby Jones.

Vilips has also recently been offered a scholarship to attend the prestigious Stanford University, which he intends to take up in 2020.
