Hatt & Bannan victorious at The National Junior Classic

Tom Hatt

In anticipation of the extreme forecast play commenced early this morning for the 2017 The National Junior Classic. Played on the Long Island site, players were treated to an immaculate championship course and near perfect weather.

The field capitalised on these conditions with seven nett scores in the 60s. The most outstanding came from Rylee Allen (Kew Golf Club) who off a handicap of 11 carded 73 for a nett score of 62! Allen was closely followed by local Ayden McDonagh (Mornington Golf Club) who has only been playing for eight months and scored a nett 64.

In the gross sections, Kay Bannan (Southern Golf Club) who recently won the SAJG Southern Classic title continued her solid form to win the girls overall with 75. And Thomas Hatt (Royal Melbourne Golf Club) was victorious with 73 off the stick, Hatt fired an impressive 34 back nine to win on a four player count-back from Rylee Allen, Matthew Lever (Moonah Links) and fellow Royal Melbourne member Harry Goakes.

Another highlight came from the group of Emmett White (Moonah Links) and Daisuke Nakajima (Kew Golf Club) who both aced from a greenside trap during the day’s play. A lasting memory for Nakajima playing in his last junior event, happy 18th birthday for Thursday!

The National Junior Classic forms part of the Victorian Junior Averages which is Golf Victoria’s overarching junior program. This Junior Averages calculate players ongoing stroke average throughout the entire year and encompasses all 18, 36 and 72 hole junior stroke events.
