Green: From fan to player

Hannah Green
Hannah Green will make her US Women's Open debut in Charleston this week

Three years ago, Hannah Green dreamt of playing in the US Open as she watched her idol Karrie Webb from the sidelines.

This week, she will live out that dream as one of seven Australians in the field in Charleston.

The exuberant 22-year-old will head into the second major of the year with an extra bounce in her step after a solid T21 performance in Virginia last week.

“I feel like I’m coming into the event with pretty good form after last week’s results, so I’m really excited,” Green told Inside The Ropes.

“I played my second practice round with Su (Oh) and Karrie today which was really nice.

“I’m used to watching them play (in the event), so it’s nice to be able to play myself - and also have their support.

The West Australian has come along way from her days as a two-time Karrie Webb Scholarship winner (2015, 2016) but remains as humble as ever about her successes.

“It’s been a long time since I played in an USGA event, so I know what the registration is like.

“But, knowing my way around and getting the passes with my name on it, I was like, ‘Oh, this is kind of strange’. Normally I’ve got Karrie’s name on there.”

The other Australians in the field are two-time champion Webb, Minjee Lee, Sarah Kemp, Katherine Kirk, Su Oh, and Victorian amateur Gabi Ruffels.

Approach to the green and putting will go a long way to determining this years champ. The 11th green is a rippper. There is a good looking horseshoe green as well on 16 and 17 has one of the most unusual hazards I've seen in the middle of the fairway. Go Aussies!

Sure, it’s more likely Hannah won’t win but the game is littered with players who have taken their first chance going all the way. Read more
