Duo fly Aussie flag at #USGirlsJunior

Grace Kim

Australia will field only two players at next week’s US Junior Girls’ championship, but they’re both legitimate contenders.

Sydney’s Grace Kim and Perth’s Maddison Hinson-Tolchard will feature in a hot field at the picturesque SentryWorld, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

Kim, 18, a member at Avondale, is one of only 12 players in the 156-strong field to have received automatic exemption into the field, courtesy of her world amateur ranking.

Both Youth Olympic and Annika Australasia champion last year and Australian Junior champion in 2017, Kim is a proven winner and desperate for success in what will likely be her final junior event.

Her fellow Australia representative at the Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific, Hinson-Tolchard, 17, the 2018 Australian Junior champion, was dominant at her regional qualifier for this tournament in Ohio.

Her 67 at Chagrin Falls, near Cleveland, two weeks ago was not only enough to win that site by five strokes, but was the joint second best score among all 42 final qualifying venues.

Since then, along with Kim, the Gosnells member attended the Golf Australia national camp in Houston, then the small matter of finishing runner-up in the IMG World Junior Championship near San Diego.

Kim will begin the first of two rounds of stroke play on Monday night, at 10.11pm Sydney time, off the 10th tee, while Hinson-Tolchard will be away three groups behind her at 8.44pm Perth time.

The top 64 players after 36 holes will advance to the match play phase from Wednesday.

Queenslander Lion Higo and New South Wales youngster June Song are among the alternates should there be any late changes to the stroke play field.
