Coletta blazes into Southern contention

Brett Coletta

Australian Brett Coletta fired the day’s best third round to charge into contention at the time-honoured Southern Amateur in South Carolina today.

Coletta is one of five Aussies in contention before tomorrow’s final round, with Lloyd Jefferson Go, of the Philippines, the leader by two at nine under.

But it was national squad member Coletta who made the biggest move up the leaderboard, finishing at six under and in a tie for third at six under.

The Victorian had something special on the go early after starting on the fifth hole and firing a birdie and an eagle in his first four holes.

He followed a bogey on the ninth with five more birdies in his next eight holes before cooling down with two late bogeys in an otherwise exemplary round at The Dunes Beach and Golf Club in Myrtle Beach.

Par rounds of 72 enabled the Gold Coast’s Anthony Quayle (-3), Cameron Davis (-3) and Austin Bautista (-2) to stay in the title race, while their fellow Sydneysider Harrison Endycott  chalked up a 71 to reach -1 overall.

Victorian David Micheluzzi fired a flat 74 to fall from contention at five over.
