Boulton and Wong claim inaugural titles at Cranbourne

Cranbourne Golf Club hosted their inaugural Amateur Championship today in true winter conditions.

Heavy showers and strong-winds looked to threaten play this afternoon, but luckily the skies cleared and sun broke through for the 88 starters.

The course held up well given the significant downpour overnight and early morning, however overall scoring was tough and the bunkers proved to be a challenge for the field.

It was a race against daylight for the last few groups, resulting in the both champion’s titles determined by count-back rather than the scheduled play-off.

Jeneath Wong from Huntingdale was victorious in the women’s section. Wong carded a round of 5 over par 77 to win on a count-back from Southern’s Kay Bannan.

Taking home women’s nett honours was Jesika Clark. The Victoria member posted a nett 76 with runner-up Kristi Bilkey (Commonwealth) a shot behind on nett 77.

Mark Boulton from Phillip Island claimed the men’s claret jug with an even par round of 72. The Victorian Mid-Amateur Champion finished with a back nine of 35 to win the count-back by 2 shots from Rosebud’s Greg Wilson.

Woodlands member Stuart Tennison posted a solid round of two-under nett par 70 for the best men’s nett score of the day. One shot behind Tennison in runner-up position was Southern’s Lazim Medini with a nett 71.

The Kooringal Open Amateur is the next event on the Ivo Whitton & Susie Tolhurt Calendar, played next Sunday 24 June.
