Aussie teens fire in California

Gabi Ruffels

The Australian contingent has made an encouraging start to the Aaron Baddeley International Junior Championship near San Diego.

Led by Victorians Cameron John and Gabi Ruffels, Australia is well represented on both boys’ and girls’ leaderboards after round one with a berth for the winners at the Emirates Australian Open and ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open on the line, respectively.

John fired an opening three-under-par 69 at the La Costa Resort and Spa Legends Course to sit third and trail American leader Charlie Reiter by three strokes.

Hot on their heels are Canberra’s Josh Armstrong (E), Brisbane’s Louis Dobbelaar (+1), the Sunshine Coast’s Lochlan Coleborn (+1) and Perth’s Ben Ferguson (+1), while Queensland’s Jediah Morgan (+4) and Adelaide’s Lachie Barker (+5) have work to do.

In the girls’ division, Melbourne’s Ruffels (-2) is tied second, just a stroke behind California’s Brianna Navarrosa.

Also well in the mix are Adelaide’s Ella Adams (E), Gold Coast’s Issy Taylor +2 and West Australian Kathryn Norris (+2).

The tournament is contested over 72 holes.
