Picturesque Mount Compass hosts day 2

AMG Day 2

The 2019 Australian Masters Games Golf Program continued at the picturesque bushland course at Mount Compass, around 45 minutes south of the Adelaide CBD on Wednesday 7 October.

Over 100 players from the 59 different golf clubs from all over Australia teed up for the week’s second stableford competition which saw gold, silver and bronze medals awarded across nine separate age, gender and handicap categories.

On a fine and sunny South Australian day, but with a southerly breeze making scoring difficult along the Mount Compass tree lined fairways, the best men’s score was returned by Blackwood’s Joshua Phillips with a score of 37 points in the Men’s 30-49 age group. Judy Mather from the East Geelong Golf Club in Victoria had the best women’s score with 33 points in winning the Women’s 70 and over group.

Other Day 2 gold medallists were:

- Women – 30-59 – Carol Warne (North Adelaide) – 32 points
- Women – 60-69 (A Grade) - Wendy Butler (Flagstaff Hill) – 32 points
- Women – 60-69 (B Grade) – Lynn Thorley (East Geelong) – 29 points
- Men – 50-59 – Steven Geall (Curlewis) – 35 points
- Men – 60-69 (A Grade) – Shayne Ashton (Nowra) – 36 points
- Men 60-69 (B Grade) – Dennis Ashton (Nambucca Heads) – 35 points
- Men 70 and over – Paul Sutcliffe (The Vines of Reynella) – 35 points

Players will enjoy the sights, sounds and delights of Adelaide on Thursday before moving to the parkland setting of West Lakes Golf Club in the bayside suburb of the same name for Friday’s final day of competition. The stroke event will offer dual medal chances with gross and nett sections in all categories.

Having also won gold on Monday in the opening stableford round at the Grange, 68-year-old Dennis Ashton will be looking for a third gold medal to cap off a memorable week for the New South Welshman. With sunny weather forecast, a wonderful finale awaits.
